American Broach has plans to sell their building on Jackson Road to Home Depot. Their move is dependent on Home Depot receiving final approval from Scio Township to build on Jackson Road.

American Broach has some 30 employees that will locate in Ypsilanti and has been in business since 1919. Broaches are the cutting tools that are used in the machining process. Paradise Manor building comes down eight months after deadly fire.

(October 11, 2007) “Finally!” That is what one resident exclaimed as they watched the burned out building knocked done. Some eight months after the devastating fire that killed three young children and displaced four other families, the apartment building is coming down.

Housing Commission officials said the delays were caused because they had to preserve the scene because of the threat of a lawsuit. Yet no lawsuit was ever filed. Jon Ichesco, Fire Marshall and Fire Chief for the City of Ypsilanti said that their investigation was complete months ago and that the building did not need to be preserved for any evidence. Fire had gutted the building in February 2007.

Walter Norris, Director of Ypsilanti Housing Commission, at a public meeting in August 2007 said that DTE and other utility companies were slow in disconnecting the utilities which caused further delays. However, DTE and YCUA said they hadn’t been contacted about disconnecting the utilities until July and August.

Paradise Manor residents said it has been difficult living next to that building all summer. “It was a constant reminder of those kids dying in the fire,” said one long-time resident that asked to be anonymous. “I am just glad we can move on.”
