Ninth Inning Three-Run Homer Catapult Rockford over Sliders

The Rockford RiverHawks put up four runs in the top of the 9th to steal the series against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. Rockford won 8-5 which was highlighted by a three-run home run in the 9th by Matt Mazurek.

The Sliders scored their first two runs of the game off Sam DeLuca’s bat. He hit a single in to left field during the 1st to bring in leadoff hitter Zack Pace who also reached on a single. In the third, DeLuca drove in Pace, again, on an infield single.

Then Rockford took the lead in the 5th with a Ben Blumenthal two-run home run. Scott Simon also scored in the 5th, off three straight Slider errors.

The Sliders did not score again until Jimmy Baker hit a two-run homerun in the 8th which tied the game at four runs a piece. Pace drove in Roberto Mena in the 9th and the Sliders’ brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th but could not score him.

Earl Oakes allowed four runs in the 9th as he picked up his first loss of the season. Brett Durand went eight strong innings, getting his second win of the year allowing four runs off ten hits and struck out six. John Muller picked up his fourth save while striking out a batter in the 9th.

Tomorrow the Sliders (7-6) travel to Crestwood Ill. to face the Windy City Thunderbolts (9-5). Mike Penn takes the mound tomorrow for the Sliders.
