TRAVERSE CITY, MI, June 12, 2009

The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti (9-10) couldn’t find a timely hit as Traverse City Beach Bums (10-9) took the first game of the weekend series 6-1.

Traverse City took an early lead with a two run homer in the first inning, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. They added another run in the second then scored three more in the fifth off a error, hit by pitch, single, and two-run double.

Midwest scored their lone run in the sixth as Jimmy Baker hit a double followed by a Gilberto Zayas single which drove Baker in. Zayas led the Sliders in hitting going 2-4 with a double and a RBI. Midwest had many chances with eight hits and multiple scoring chances but couldn’t find a timely hit.

“We’re not getting the big hit right now,” Sliders manager Eric Coleman said. “They got the big two out hits, and we didn’t.”

James Albury received the loss going 4.2 innings allowing six runs, three earned, off eight hits, while striking out six. The Sliders bullpen threw a scoreless 3.1 innings while striking out five between Jon Haldis, J.J. Pannell, and Arshwin Asjes.

Tomorrow’s game will be the middle game of the series at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Chris Nyman (0-2, 11.81) will take the mound for Midwest against lefty Shawn Joy (0-0, 4.15).
