Sliders Pounce on Beach Bums’ Mistakes to Even Series

TRAVERSE CITY, MI, June 13, 2009

The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti capitalized off of Traverse City Beach Bums miscues to win. Traverse City’s six walks and four errors crippled them in tonight’s 11-3 loss to Midwest. The Sliders also did their fair share of hitting with 11 hits to put up 11 runs.

Roberto Mena tripled in the top of the first, and then scored off a Jimmy Baker sacrifice fly to start the Sliders scoring. Midwest scored again in the fourth as Jeremy Jones hit a single, followed by a Gilberto Zayas doubled that drove Jones in, to tie the game at two.

In the seventh the Bums mistakes began, the Sliders’ scored two runs off of a wild pitch and throwing error. It only took three hits to score six runs in the top of the eighth inning due to three errors and two walks by Traverse City. Stephan Flora picked up his first hit with the Sliders in the inning driving in a run. Jeremy Jones added a two run single to finish the Sliders scoring at 11 runs.

Nate Kafke earned the win coming out of the bullpen throwing 1.2 innings of hitless baseball. Chris Nyman made a good start for Midwest going 4.2 innings and only allowing one earned run. B.J. Hagen received the loss for the Bums allowing a run in two innings.

Tomorrow’s rubber match features Midwest’s’ southpaw Kyle Kearcher (1-2, 4.05) against righty Brett Bostelman (4-0, 0.38). Following the game the Sliders will head to Kalamazoo for a three game set against the Kings.
