YPSILANTI, August 5, 2009

The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti are now 33-33 and have won five straight games after beating the Traverse City Beach Bums 12-7. Joash Brodin lead the Sliders sticks belting four hits and scoring three runs. The Sliders bullpen for the second straight night held off the Bums comeback efforts.

Midwest jumped on Traverse City starter David Dinelli early on in the first inning. The first five Sliders reached either on walks and singles. All five runners scored also, two due to a Robbie Knapp base knock, two walked in, and Joash Brodin scored on a Jonnie Knoble sacrifice fly.

Bryan Bonner drove two more Slider runs in during the second inning, building the advantage to 7-0. The Beach Bums came storming back between the third and fourth innings putting five runs on the scoreboard making the game 7-5. Mike Victor highlighted the Bums scoring with a two-run bomb over Knoble in left field.

John Haldis came on for starter Kyle Wink in the fourth and ended the scoring threat leaving two runners on. Haldis threw a scoreless fifth and sixth to hold the Sliders two-run lead. Haldis earned his second win of the season.

The Sliders had three singles in the bottom of the eighth followed up by a Jonnie Knoble triple to clear the bases. Midwest pushed across two more insurance runs to give them a 12-5 cushion.

Eric Gilliland relieved Haldis in the seventh inning. Gilliland set down the first seven batters he faced and collected the save striking out four batters in the final three innings.

Thursday night will conclude the Sliders incredible sixth game home stand. The Sliders will send Mike Penn on the mound for their second straight sweep at EMU’s Oestrike Stadium beginning at 7:05 p.m. Penn started the winning streak Saturday throwing 7 1/3 and only allowing two runs while striking out eight.
